Bath, England

In Persuasion by Jane Austen, nineteenth century Bath is depicted as a bustling resort town where all sorts somehow end up in – well, particularly if they were an ‘invalid’ who thought that the Roman baths could cure what ailed them (imagined or otherwise).

Needless to say, modern day Bath is a vastly different place with shops in the city centre as far as the eye can see, a bustling Christmas market and even a group of anti-war activists in front of Bath Abbey.

But the lush green parks and grand old buildings are just as beautiful now as they were two hundred years ago.
